A persons pet is like an extra member of the family, a brother or sister that is cared for and protected as much as possible. They are so valuable to their owners that the dog or cat is brought with them when they are traveling to the store, or all the way to Timbuktu. Although some people just let their dog ride in the back of their pickup truck, a much safer way is to comfortable place them in suitable pet carriers. Dog carriers are a much easier and most importantly safer way of transporting a pet whether its in a car, train, boat, bicycle or airplane.

Pet carriers come in a wide variety of sizes and designs, some of them are very functional while others are extravagant and stylish. The basic needs for a carrier are enough space for the dog or cat to sit and lay down comfortably. They should also have enough room to stand up and turn around, but not much more room at all. A carrier with too much room can be just as dangerous as having them unsecured in the interior of a car. Pet products are not one size fits all, they need to be as individual as the pet.

Small animals need small carriers. Cats, Chihuahuas, Maltese, Pomeranians, Shih Tzu’s, and small terriers should have carriers that are about 20 inches in length, 16 inches wide and about 15 inches high. Medium sized dogs, such as beagles, bulldogs, chow chows, cocker spaniels, Dalmatians, and miniature poodles can easily fit into medium sized dog carriers which are roughly 30 inches long and comparable dimensions to both larger and smaller models. Large dogs such as German shepherds, poodles, mastiffs, Labradors, Rottweiler’s, and great Danes need large or extra large pet carriers that can be up to 48” tall.

For longer trips there are carriers that have their own climate control which is powered by batteries, through the electric outlet at home, or the cigarette lighter in a car or truck. This ensures that even if the owner is away from their pet for a short period of time the animal will still be comfortable whether its 100 degrees or well below zero. They also have places for food and water but they are not designed for long periods of time and it’s better to take the animal with than to leave them in any unattended vehicle.

A backpack pet carrier is a great way to bring Fido everywhere from the bank to the butcher shop. They are comfortable for their owner to wear and provide a snugly place for the animal. A regular backpack just doesn’t cut it, it should have plenty of ventilations and a flat area for the animal to sit or lie on. They work on a bicycle as well, but there are specialty bicycle pet carriers which can be easily attached to most bicycles and are much safer.

Some of the most innovative and interesting pet carriers have a style all their own. They can be designer bags or simply ingenious mass produced designs. Some are specially shaped so the animal has more room for their head than their tail making the carrier smaller and easier to handle. Add some wheels and you have a very easy to move pet carrier.
